Having received a grant to promote eco awareness in the school and local community, we were approached by Morden Primary School in Surrey to come up with a creative solution to their particular needs.
Needs being that they wanted to have an eco classroom which the children could actively be involved in, so that the building itself could be an educational resource. The school staff were particularly keen to promote renewable energy.
We therefore devised a small outdoor classroom which had two kinds of renewable energy sources – firstly an educational solar panel and wind turbine which is roof mounted. The energy created from the sun and wind is then stored in a battery which is mounted onto a special panel inside the building. By way of an inverter, this energy is then turned into usable electricity so that the children can use the two power sockets on the board to power up tablets, visualisers, lights etc. The board also has a data monitoring function so that the children can study how much energy is being created on a windy or sunny day for example and how much CO2 is being saved by the creation of this green energy.
Secondly, we have also supplied them with a special electricity producing dynamo bike which the children have to pedal in order to power up a mobile and tablet charging device. Pedal power in its purest form!
This truly is an eco classroom and a video can be seen of it in action on the below link:
